i made a big decision yesterday - i actually went to a movie at the theaters. now this might not sound like a big decision, but i hadn't been to the theaters since 2001. i was really tired of paying a lot of money to see boring images and hackneyed writing. anything that's been out since then that i've had any interesting in seeing, i've watched on cable or dvd.
so what got me to break my six year streak? the coen brothers + cormac mccarthy. no country for old men. my favorite movie makers and one of my favorite books. and it did not disappoint. the coens stayed faithful to the text (omitting only one scene with a female hitchhiker) and managed to put their signature on it, with the visuals and the silence. i've never seen (heard?) silence used in such a brilliant and engaging way. you heard the wind blow in the desert. you heard the footsteps of chirugh as he walked up to each victim. it was a glorious silence punctuated by crisp, simple dialog and the periodic bursts of violence. the movie has a last scene with the sheriff (tommy lee jones) and his wife, then just fades into the credits - no music until 2 minutes into the credits and that slowly fades in. i heard the crowd gasp (or maybe breathe for the first time the whole movie) - i even heard one person exhale "holy fuck" - you should have felt relief at the end, but you're left holding your breath. it'll be a crime if this movie doesn't get any major oscar noms (and wins).
this was the movie to break the streak with, and now it's back on the wagon (until the next coen bros flick ;-)
