west coasting

WOW - the past six days have been a whirlwind, but completely awesome.

the reason we were out there to being with was the circus. the shows were a mixed bag - not a lot of people, but the ones that were there were loud and enthusiastic. i was happy i didn't have to work either one. so in vegas i got a massage at the spa at Paris. in sf, i went to the cartoon art museum (edward gorey rules!) and the sf museum of modern art.

vegas was good to see once, but the boy and I saw everything we needed to so we don't really have any desire to go back. it's disneyland with sex, gambling and open containers of alcohol on the streets. the boy made a good point that if you live in a big city (or you're carny like he is), you've seen everything that vegas is making reference to (ny, paris, broadway shows, gambling), but if you live in the middle of america, it's decadent and thrilling b/c you're not used to it.

we decided to make this trip really cool and different by driving from vegas to sf. we rented a white Mustang convertible...we both had a good time driving that. The transition from desert to mountains to coastline was very cool. we had to drive through a huge sandstorm - all windy like a snowstorm, but the sand snaked beige across the highway instead of the snow white i'm used to. We stopped at an old silver mine/ghost town, which was fun. kids and dogs dressed up for halloween.

In SF, on sunday night we took the cable car from the beginning at Powell St (which was two blocks away from out hotel) to Fisherman's Wharf and back after eating a sushi dinner...a great way to see the interior of the city. Monday was a huge drive through the city - the baseball stadium, Lombard St (the crookedest street in the world), the Golden Gate bridge, Muir woods (which was amazing b/c i'm used to east coast forests and this was totally different with the redwoods - what struck me after the immense scale of everything was the scent - it smelled so different and exquisite), the western side of the city (a neighborhood called sunset - very cute homes which reminded me of the sf version of south philly), stopped at a beach to walk in the Pacific Ocean (which i'd never done), Haight-Ashbury (i didn't know that the hippies needed the gourmet coffee/designer clothes/fancy cheese spread of the revolution), then we ended the day at sunset on Twin Peaks - the perfect ending to the day. and i'm very proud of myself for planning all that out on my own with a paper map that morning. take that crappy google/yahoo/mapquest directions! stoopid intarwebs ;-)

ha ha! your perception of vegas was just like mine, adjectives included...disneyland for adult.

did you get the box that fedex left on your stoop for you? they left it on the 22nd...so maybe your able bodied mail staff picked it up for you in your absence.

    love the pics, btw.

    xoxo,
