malcolm and jack

------------==========SHILL==========------------

as most of you who read this blog are readers, you may have heard about jack kerouac's "on the road" 50th anniversary this year. but there's another book about kerouac that you should check out...malcolm and jack by ted pelton. it's about the imagined meeting of jack kerouac and malcolm x in the 1940's before either was famous. "Malcolm & Jack is an ambitious, fast-moving, kaleidoscopic novel of the underside of American Empire in the founding decade of its post-WW II incarnation. Mixing fact and fiction, real-life and made-up characters, Pelton's jazz rhythms and multiple voices bring to life an era different from that of "America's Greatest Generation" bromides, whether it be Billie Holiday relating how she lost her singing voice in jail or Beat Generation men reflecting how their sexuality has made them criminals, in a car bound for Alfred Kinsey's Sex Institute."

i bought it when it came out last year and it's a great read. please support an amazing writer who's outside the mainstream press by buying the book (and leaving a review on amazon!)...or let me know and i'll buy you a copy for the next present-giving day.
