nyc

dear new york,

i once loved you. you beckoned me with giant concrete mountains, sparkling aurorae day and night, everything the world has to offer in 23.7 square miles. your skyline is visible for miles, like a permanent fireworks display. you have the highest and lowest of cultures. you are the muse of many artists and poets. you were what i thought i wanted.

i visit you now and you have changed; long before you lost part of your skyline, before your crossroads were swept clean, spotless. there is no depth to your soul. it's a veneer of americana with nothing underpinning it. i miss your edge, your darkness, your filth. you've lost your truth, my dear dead city. at least philadelphia remains true, in the midst of it's ugliness.

yours long ago,
r.
