pop philosphy, my butt!

i read an articled called "The 7 Milestones of Maturity". The author says this article "represents my first cut at cracking the code of adulthood, at charting the moments when we stopped being kids and started our path to personal responsibility, parenthood and perishability." Here's the list:
1) Monogamy
2) Mortgage
3) Marriage
4) Munchkins (kids)
5) Monotony
6) Midlife
7) Mortality

I'll set aside the obvious objections I have (like not everyone can be legally married - although he does address that to say just being deeply committed to someone - and why the hell does having kids mean you're mature? about about the 16 year olds who have kids, or the people who have some sort of issues/demons, or on the other side of the coin, those of us who choose not to have kids).

but what the hell is with monotony being on that list. i'm supposed to embrace the routine and tedium of life? what the hell is that about? it's one thing to appreciate little things in your life - whether it pertains to your kids, your partner in life, your job, or your passion - but to call that monotony? what the hell is that?

he does go on to explain what he means: "Part of the challenge in adapting to parenthood, it seems to me, is accepting, even embracing, the simpler pleasures that parent life brings." ok, so only parenting and all the little things your kids do are markers for maturity? becoming successful at something (you career, your talent, your sport, etc) isn't enough? developing and nurturing relationships with friends and an extended network of people in your community isn't a part of maturity? and how about being engaged in your community and nation? why is it only the most personal things are the signposts? it just seems to me those are awfully narrow, although i'm sure the case could be made that those are universals. but it's so much more than buying a house or birthing a kid. it's about something important (and don't get me wrong, it could be a child or a house or a marriage), something that changes you, someone else, your community, the world for the better. that's being a goddamn adult.

that and a vast knowledge of cursing...hahahahahahahaha. i just could be serious the whole post :-D

current mood: amused
current noise: the sarah silverman show "he bakes pies and exposes lies" - brilliant!
