we found a witch, may we burn her?

witches, communists, african-americans, irish, chinese, japanese, GLBT, mexicans....who is the persecuted minority this week?

* hooray for some compassionate senators who decided it would be ridiculous to pass an amendment saying marriage should be one man and one woman. i've seen too many man/woman marriages that are detrimental to everyone involved, especially the children. why shouldn't we allow a stable, loving couple the chance to be seen as legally responsible for one another in the eyes of the law? that's all a marriage is under american law....it has nothing to do with religion or the bible. i wish people would remember that america was based on people wanting religious freedom, not on the teachings of a book.

* boo to everyone demanding that "immigrants" speak english...just come out and say you're talking about mexicans. here's what's going on in south philly right now, which has seen a huge influx of mexicans in the past 5 years.
How do you say cheesesteak with in Spanish?

Joseph Vento, the owner of Geno's Steaks, doesn't know. And he doesn't care.

Just read the laminated signs, festooned with American eagles, at his South Philadelphia cheesesteak emporium: This is America. When Ordering, Speak English.

Vento's political statement - from a man whose Italian-born grandparents spoke only broken English - captures the anger and discontent felt by many Americans about illegal immigrants.

now, how can someone who came from immigrants be so arrogant, unless he's prejudiced/racist against mexicans but won't say it outright? everyone should have a chance to come here and create a better life for himself. that's what vento's grandparents did, that's what my grandparents did...but now the immigration laws are so complicated that it's impossible to come here legally. i'd like to see vento go to mexico to see why people are coming here to droves (and it has something to do with their economy being ruined by NAFTA)

and as for making english the only and official language, people should look to canada...they are officially a two language nation and i don't think that's brought about the destruction of their country (and yes, canada has its own culture...watch their tv sometime)

how about we focus on what's important...clearing out empty lots to create public gardens; making good education a priority instead of pushing for meaningless testing that just focuses on the facts instead of preparing kids for a lifetime of learning outside the classroom and informed decision making; helping out those less fortunate in our communities so they can get the same chance that we have to make our lives better; doing whatever small or big action we can to improve the neighborhoods, communities and cities we live in...instead of being petty, ignorant and focusing on the issues professional politicians use as a smoke-screen to hide the real issues.

i said this years ago, but what if america wasn't one big country, but more like the eu - a collection of smaller countries/states. that way all the religious right people could be in their own little repressed area and could leave me and my strongly held extremely leftist beliefs alone.

i have other things to talk about that are less political, but i'll post those later in a separate entry.

current mood: apparently awake and less jet-lagged
current song: "livin' like a bug ain't easy" (the kafka rock opera) from the home movies bonus cd included in the home movies season 4 dvd collection
