"Octavia E. Butler, considered the first black woman to gain national prominence as a science fiction writer, died after falling and striking her head on the cobbled walkway outside her home, a close friend said. She was 58."

I'm not one for sci-fi normally, but I've read several of her stories for women's studies and lit classes. She made me enjoy it because she tackled issues like slavery within the context of science fiction. Saying her death makes me sad really doesn't do this justice.
