"Hello posterity. Lovely to meet you at last"

finished reading Eleanor Rigby by Douglas Coupland last night. it's basically a story about loneliness. the main character liz leads a very solitary life for a variety of reasons...she doesn't feel like she can connect with people, she has low self-esteem and she's really a misanthrope. then along comes jeremy (i can't say who is he, because that would spoil the surprise) and he opens up liz to visions of farmers, singing backwards and generally creating a life for herself. there's quite a few twists and turns in the plot, so i don't want to reveal too much if you're thinking about reading it.

my thoughts: for those of you who don't know, i'm a huge mark for Coupland, so i was completely stoked to see this book at the library. but something about it just doesn't quite click...i'm not sure if it's because he's trying to write from a female point of view and something in that isn't quite ringing true...maybe it's because the narrative jumps around quite a bit within a timeline and it's not clearly delineated. and it's not like the book didn't keep my interest...i wanted to read it to see what happens to liz and jeremy at the end, but something's just not right. i've always loved his writing style, very clean but with beautiful phrasing just when the narrative needs it, but i think i may have to read this again (and actually buy it to complete my coupland collection) since most of my first reads are just to get the plot down in my head. after my second reading, i'll post another review. the next book on my list, which is really two novella, is "Miss Lonelyhearts" and "Day of the Locust" by Nathanael West. Very excited to be reading these, as they've been on my list of things to read for years now and i just got it for xmas.

in the real world - the boy's headed out for another fip weekend. neither one of us want him to go, but he'll be back sunday and in the meantime i'll get some stuff done. and i'm trying to wean myself off of listening to npr all day long...i can't be so angry about politics all the time. it's just not healthy.
