wtf?

i didn't think i was going to post today, but i just read this on cnn.com:
WASHINGTON - The Senate blocked oil drilling in an Alaska wildlife refuge Wednesday, rejecting a must-pass defense spending bill where supporters positioned the quarter-century-old environmental issue to garner broader support.

Drilling backers fell four votes short of getting the required 60 votes to avoid a threatened filibuster of the defense measure over the oil drilling issue. Senate leaders were expected to withdraw the legislation so it could be reworked without the refuge language. The vote was 56-44.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist was among those who for procedural reasons cast a “no” vote, so that he could bring the drilling issue up for another vote.

i'm so thankful that the senate had enough sense to stop a piece of legislation that was trying to be snuck in by underhanded congressmen. but here's the wtf moment:
The vote was a stinging defeat for Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, who for years has waged an intense fight to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. He had thought this time he would finally get his wish.

Stevens called the refuge’s oil vital to national security and bemoaned repeated attempts over the years by opponents using the filibuster to kill drilling proposals.

so you're telling me that the SENATOR from ALASKA was trying to open up the refuge for drilling? and how exactly is getting a few more DROPS of oil vital to national security? yada, yada, i know the rhetoric that if we're less dependent on foreign oil, then we'll be safer as a nation. how about we invest in other modes of energy production that are less harmful to the environment rather than destroy more wilderness/animals/plants/indigenous lifestyles? i know, i know...that's much too progressive (and not the political ideology) for most of congress. f those bastards.

in other news, i've printed close to 300 photos of various kids with santa. 300. now i know how the photomart feels and that's got to be a royally sucky job.

also, i've been reading some friends' blogs today, but haven't been able to comment. just know i'm out here reading, but don't have the time to post anything....sending you all mucho amor.

i read that about the drilling yesterday too and was baffled that a senator would want his own state drilled in. perhaps he doesn't realize how his constituents feel (or doesn't care) or maybe alaskans are all for it. who knows. i'm just glad it got blocked.
