after the craptacular couple of weeks i've had, as well as the unnatural weather we've had around here (bitterly cold for a week, then near 70 every day for two weeks), it's finally autumn outside.
i was locking my outer door and cursing myself for forgetting my iPod (even though i had Kanye West's "Touch the Sky" in my head), when i took a deep breath and realized the air finally had THAT smell...fallen, crunchy leaves; the patches of grass going through a slow decay; the air that's not overly warm nor has that early winter bite - the closest temperature to perfect i can think of; a light breeze that carried that mix around the city, swirled it around my head and face, like someone brushing my face with the back of their fingers. the leaves had been slowly changing in the city for days, but everything is much more ochre, crimson and sepia. this is the day that i crave, that my body and mind need to ease into a change of season. i wish i could have walked more than the 11 blocks to work. this is a day i should leave the city and walk around in the woods - like i used to do in a short drive outside my hometown - absorbing all the glory of nature, retaining it in my blood and bones, to get me through the hibernation of winter and all the darkness that means, until springtime when everything awakes again.
i'm going to have to make up a reason to walk around outside again today before the rain comes. and it looks like the muse is finally back. maybe now i can get back to writing the damn novel.
